Google and Samsung announced a partnership last year and announced that they are jointly using Wear OS. Samsung parted ways with Tizen on smartwatches and Google even developed the first Pixel Watch.
The old Wear OS partners were ignored at launch and are only now beginning to catch up, but Samsung alone makes the difference. According to Google, the number of Wear OS smartwatches has tripled since the launch of Wear OS 3.
We’re talking about a time span of fewer than two years because Google says it will take effect in May 2021. Unfortunately, Google did not want to give specific figures, but they certainly did not look good before 2021, since Wear OS hardly had any market share.
I’m happy, also as an Apple Watch user, because that finally means good things and more competition. Let’s see what 2023 will bring, I’m counting on Wear OS 4 at Google I/O in May. And a Google Pixel Watch 2 might come too.
